First look on Google's new OS!!

Accept for a few random announcements by google I had nothing much to say on the Google OS yet. But after all the buzz last december (Read Google Vs Microsoft, Google OS vs Windows), I see very clearly that Google announced something, people saw something else. I have read the original Google blogpost over and over again and I see no mention of

a) This being a full fleged OS
b) Competing with Windows OS anytime in the near future, (rather bringing in a new approach to netbooks)

So if you are still unclear about what I am speaking, Google just dropped a bomb yesterday with the announcement of the Google Chrome OS. Its not that we didn’t hear about it before, but it was always believed to be an extension of Android, instead of an all new platform…
Google said:
today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks.

While Microsoft boldly claims to control 96% of netbook market (along with the majority in desktop OS market); Google still targets the web! With this new OS Google wants to ensure a better share of the internet crowd.

Google’s focus on mobile (Read Android, Apps) is fueled by the growth of Mobile Internet and the same funda goes behind the Chrome OS announced yesterday (IMO). Chrome OS is open source and would be free. Being a 2009 / 2010 development product (and of course the fact that its Open Source) makes it much more comfortable and compatible with the low power / lite hardware that netbooks carry.

If you read the original Google announcement – its clear that Chrome OS is for the people who believe that everything they need to store and access would be / cane be on the web.For this very same reason I feel its stupid to ask for Adobe Photoshop and other heavy applications to run on Google OS, or even ask if this would support all existing hardware devices (driver issues etc). Come on, its a NETBOOK OS for now!

First Look: The Google tablet interface

The iPad came and went down with a lot of criticism. In a market where traditional PC’s rule and only the scaled down version of the very same interface sells, Google tried to sell us the Chrome OS concept last year and got a luke warm response (better than the bombing iPad has got). With the 2010 flavour of tablets, a tablet version of Chrome OS is what we are looking at now.

Last month we hard heard rumors of HTC working on a Google tablet that would be powered by the Chrome OS and here we have a tablet concept UI posted on the official Chromium site. While Chromium is the open source community that powers the Chrome browser and the Chrome OS, Techcrunch notes that these might well be posted by Glen Murphy (Google Chrome’s designer).

It is rumored that Google is working closely with manufacturers to fine tune the Chrome tablet.
This seems to be the only way in which Google can counter the advantage cos like Apple & Palm have (controlling the entire experience: hardware + software).

Mobience small QWERTY for touchscreen devices.

When the world is busy shifting to new full touchscreen devices like the iPad, there are a lot of people who still love to type on physical keyboard. For such audience, South Korean company Mobiance have developed a pocket sized keypad called the small QWERTY.

Although the name does have the words QWERTY in it, the device is more of a traditional keypad used in cellphones. There are eight additional functional buttons to the keypad, four on each side. The user would have to tap button multiple times for typing on this device.

The developers of the keypad have not revealed any technical specifications of the device. Which means, the connectivity mode used and the compatibility of the keypad is not known for now. Also, there is no news on its pricing and availability.

Junior iPad coming in 2011??

-Apple’s iPad received an overwhelming response from tablet lovers with over 300,000 iPad sold on the very first day of its launch. But for some, the 10″ iPad is way too big. So for those people "like me" Apple is working on a junior iPad which would fit perfect between the iPad and the iphone.
Apple is working on a mini iPad which is sheduled to release in US in the first quarter of 2011. The mini iPad would be target to those audiences who focus mainly on reading and web browsing instead of the full blown features of an iPad. This mini iPad would feature a display size of 5″ to 7″ and would cost below $400.

HP Slate would also be launched in the mid 2010 and would not be able to provide competitive portable experience as it uses Intel processor which consumes more power. But for sure HP Slate would effect iPad’s sales, as some people (mainly indians) still trust "Intel Inside".

But if you ask me this (ipad Nano) will become aa nice april fool joke! :-P

Guess what? Now an Android based TV!!!

Phew!!! With the slew of Apple gadgets taking the market like a storm its okay if you are not very amazed with what you are reading right now. Rest assured, amazed you will be perhaps after the iPad fever has mellowed down a bit.

Now coming to the topic; a Swedish company called People of Lava, yes you read the name right, has come up with a 42″inch HD-LED TV called the Scandinavia. Its actually an Android based Google TV with multiple capabilities ranging from TV, Internet, Multimedia, Internet and Social Media – all interconnected.

To start with it comes preloaded with a lot of free apps like YouTube, Google Maps, Weather, Time, Calendar, Internet Browser and much more. Also it gives you the option to connect to social media sites like twitter, facebook and orkut. Whats more amazing is the fact that they have installed their own customized email program to check emails on the TV itself. Android being an opensource we can expect a lot of other apps shortly for this TV, which also has a thoroughly improved UI for the TV.
Prices arent out yet.

After Nintendo revolutionized the gaming industry by introducing motion gaming through Wii, Sony and Microsoft started catching up for the same. While MICROSOFT's PROJECT NATAL is yet to be released, Sony has introduced its – Playstation Move. Sony introduced its motion gaming controller at the Game Developers Conference or the GDC 2010.

The motion gaming controller is an upgrade to the Playstation eye camera. Playstation Move is compatible only with the PS3. The Move system would consist of the Move controller and a sub-controller. The sub-controller would be used for games that require both hand motions. Sony claims that the controller is super-accurate. Here is what they have to say;
“PlayStation Move motion controller delivers unmatched accuracy through its advanced motion sensors, including a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, as well as a color-changing sphere that is tracked by PlayStation Eye camera.”
Playstation Move would be sold in three different packages. The basic package would consist of only the controllers. Another package would include the controllers along with Playstation Eye and a Game. The third one is a complete package for the new users. (Including the PS3; No prizes for guessing that though).
36 game publishers have supported the Move system and over 20 Move enabled games would be released in the fiscal 2010.

Sony announced that the second package (Move controllers + Playstation Eye + one game) would be available for around $100 In US and in India you gotta wait for December 2010. The pricing of the other packages were not announced. The Move system is expected to be avaiable in month or two in US. :)

Sidewinder – Another Wrist Mobile Phone

Now, here’s somthing very new - a hot wrist mobile phone – Sidewinder, designed by Susan Cho (ex- MICROSOFT EMPLOYEE, i dont know why the hell she left it,stupid!), whose idea was to create a multi-touch cell phone that a person could wear on his/her wrist.

Do you think, this might be the next stage in technological development? Unfortunately, the multi-touch technology has not reach the phase in which it could be used in a device with such a small interface. Nevertheless, Sidewinder watch phone is still worth mentioning on Gadgets.
The designer says that the watch phone has several menus and boasts a number of tools such as contacts, keypad, GPS, maps and other features that can be found today on smartphones. In addition, the Sidewinder incorporates multi-touch technology.
So go and watch at least instead of buying it, buying it is not every comon man's cup of tea, the rates are high (more than what you must be thinking).

Next-Generation Robosapien Robot!!

This is the next evolution of the Robosapien, capable of autonomous behavior and equipped with interactive sensors to recognize objects and respond to sounds. It can be programmed to execute more than 60 different movements, including dancing, exploring, lifting items, or bowling (ball and pins included).

It responds to touch and sound with advanced sensors like a camera that detects skin tone (hold out your hand, and the robot knows to shake it) and object color (the robot collects blue objects when handed them).

The robot avoids obstacles intelligently as it walks, and sonic sensors detect sharp noises, responding with a hearty Hey, there! and turning to face the sound.

It can bend and pick up small objects on command, using its precision-gripping, articulated fingers, and then it can throw the object to you.

The robot has true-to-life bi-pedal walking gaits and realistic double-axis head turns. It can use its sonic and infrared sensors to guard an area (sounding an alarm when motion or sound is detected) and to interact with other Robosapiens.

WINDOWS 7

After a long wait by vista users worldwide, a brand new window is out by Microsoft – Windows 7. That was mainly made to improve the bugs of windows vista.

So all the vista users who are tired by seeing common messages “ Windows Vista cannot run the program “ that to just because that program or software was made when there was just windows XP and Vista came much later will be fuly releifed after upgrading to Windows 7.

The best point about Windows 7 is that it runs the programs which are made for XP and vista both.Unlike Vista which mostly don’t run the programs designed for windows XP.

Take a look at these highlighted features in Windows 7 Home Premium:
* Watch, pause, rewind, and record TV, movies, and other video content (MOVIE MAKER IS TOTALLY IMPROVED).
* Use Windows Media Player to stream music files on any network-connected device. Window media player is fully updated; it runs mostly all types of media formats and codec’s.
* Easily change backgrounds, window colors, and sounds to reflect your personal style, format of windows is totally different as compared to previous Windows.
* Instantly locate and open virtually any file on your PC, from documents to emails to songs, right from the Start menu, just by typing a word or two, with new redefined Windows Search.
* Use Home Group to connect all your PCs running Windows 7 to a single printer or to synchronize with other systems (this is very user friendly).
* Access recently used files faster than ever.
* Pin any program to the taskbar and rearrange the icons on the taskbar just by clicking and dragging. (this is totally new).

The style is totally different. The time of windows XP is gone now because soon XP will be removed from shelves worldwide. So people who are worrying to use Windows 7, don’t worry just go for it ,its totally new and different and definitely its very important for Vista users to upgrade to windows 7 as vista still have some bugs.
VERDICT: A very different Windows by Microsoft. people who are tired from the sme layout and theme of Micrsoft, can try it. So dont think much and your OS to Windows 7.

THE PRICE OF WINDOWS 7 IN INDIAN MARKET IS: 7500 Rs. (Multiple users)

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

A brand new phone by Nokia is out. “Nokia 5800 Xpress Music”. That’s a full Touch screen phone. It can give a complete competition to Apple’s I Phone.

The main feature of Nokia 5800 is that it gives you 3G facility i.e. watching the other person while talking to him, just like video chat. But of course In India, the govt. hasn’t allowed many cities to start 3G, so you gotta wait for it. The phone comes with an amazing camera of 3.2 megapixels camera, with a dual flash. The camera is just too good to play with. It actually has 2 cameras on both the sides of the phone. One is on the back side of the phone (default position of cameras on phone), the other one is on the front side on the top which allows you to have a comfortable video conversation (3G).

For your convenience Nokia has provided 4 types of keyboards. And the best one is the handwriting keyboard in which you just have to draw the letters on screen with the stick that comes with the phone. GPS (Global positioning system) also in the phone, but you have to activate GPS on your phone by your service provider.

As the world knows Xpress Music’s main feature is its sound. The speakers are amazingly amazing:-D, sound is very good, especially when you listen music from the headphones provided by Nokia. Clarity in videos is superb. Nokia gives you 8 GB memory card with the phone which can be extended.

Nokia 5800 Main Features and Specs

  • · 8GB Micro SD Card you can Extend upto 16GB for all your music collection
  • · Store upto 6000 tracks in your nokia 5800

  • · Wi-Fi
  • · GPS
  • · Bluetooth
  • · Stereo FM with RD

The cost of the phone is: Rs.12,600 Indian Rupee

As I m using this phone, the only problem which I faced was that after I used it for 4-5 months, the phone’s touch screen is giving me problems- like the touch has became very slow, and scratches are mostly visible on my LCD. Nokia should really rectify this problem. But except this problem the phone is superb, I really loved it, its features, its good looks, everything is just very good. The phone is very practical and very user friendly.

Rating:- 4 out of 5 J (WOULD HAVE BEEN 5 ON 5, IF TOUCH DIDN’T HAD GAVE ME PROBLEMS).

VERDICT:- A brilliant phone by Nokia. Very good looks with lots of features. Not very expensive according to the features, rightly priced. Touch is not so good of the phone, so have to be a bit careful.
